Leigh Dougherty
I am a local Nelson artist who works in Textured Acrylics using both brush and palette knife to achieve my loose interpretation of landscapes. Largely self-taught in this medium, I like to experiment with many textured products including sand and then chipping back into my work to capture the desired look.
My work is often a reference from the coastline around New Zealand or can simply be intuitive from happy memories. With the depth of colour and lights coming from the ever-changing sky I am never short of material to draw from. I love to experiment and try innovative and exciting approaches which means there will always be something new to see in my work. I am lucky enough to have sold many works both here in New Zealand and overseas.
My love of the interaction between land and water features strongly in my work, as I am at my happiest walking along our many beaches, rivers and lake fronts. In fact, our family album has few photos of me not standing in front of a headland somewhere. I was taught to draw by an award-winning artist and teacher in Kapiti some years back now, but have never stopped learning new skills, completing many weekend workshops and tutorials with inspirational artists from around New Zealand and Australia and am currently enrolled at NMIT.
